When you buy or rent a new home, carpet cleaning is often on the list. The question is timing. Cleaning before your furniture arrives and after you move in each have advantages.
Empty rooms allow every square foot to be cleaned, including areas that will sit under beds and sofas for years. You start with carpet cleaned for your household rather than the previous one. Drying is easier when no one is walking on it.
Schedule it a day or two before moving day so the carpet is dry when movers arrive.
Moving day itself brings in soil from boxes, dollies and shoes. Cleaning after you settle removes that, too. The downside is that furniture must be moved or worked around.
If you clean after, plan the rooms you want cleaned first.
Some households clean before move-in, then spot treat traffic paths after moving day. Use floor runners during the move to reduce soil.

Moving day is hard on carpet. Lay plastic carpet protection film or runners along the main path from the door to each room. Ask movers to use clean dollies and keep heavy items off wet or freshly cleaned carpet. Place boxes on hard floors where possible.
Keep a doormat at each entry and, if the weather is wet, a towel inside the door. After the move, vacuum all paths thoroughly to pick up grit tracked in. If you cleaned before moving, a quick spot treatment on traffic paths often restores the look without a second full cleaning. Mention any carpet you want treated when you call.
A day or two ahead gives carpet time to dry before furniture arrives.
You can ask, but cleaning for your own move-in lets you choose the timing and method.
It is best to wait until carpet is dry. If you must, use protective blocks or tabs under furniture legs.
