Many coffee spots can be treated successfully, although results depend on the carpet and how long the spill has remained. The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) recommends blotting rather than scrubbing because aggressive scrubbing can damage carpet texture.
Coffee contains natural tannins that can dye fibers, and added milk or sugar leave residue.
Fresh spills respond best. Older spills may leave a tan shadow.
Scrubbing spreads the spill and frays fibers. Blot from the outside in.
A treatment suited to tannin stains is applied, then rinsed and extracted.
If the dye has changed, some shading may remain after cleaning.
